Try The Professional Way To Whiter Smile

Red haired lady smile | Milllburn Dental Arts | New Jersey

It doesn’t happen overnight, but once you notice it, it becomes almost impossible to ignore.

Over time, stains build on your teeth. The stains come with every sip of coffee, every soft drink, every bite of spaghetti, and every piece of dessert that you eat.

When you notice it, your first instinct may be to run to the nearest store and look for a “whitening” product in the toothpaste aisle. What you should be doing is making an appointment at our dentist office if you live in or near Millburn, NJ.

Our professional teeth whitening is going to remove deeper stains, which will do more to restore your bright, white smile.

If you are interested in teeth whitening, call Millburn Dental Arts at (973) 957-1604 or fill out our online appointment form to get started.

A Quick Word About Tobacco

It’s natural and normal for your teeth to become darker or yellower as you get older. Practically any food or drink you swallow can add to the stains your teeth. As small particles are left behind, they slowly but surely change the appearance of your smile.

But none of those things will harm your smile as fast as tobacco. It doesn’t matter if you are smoking or using chewing tobacco. Any tobacco product is going to cause your teeth to become stained much, much faster.

Those tobacco stains can be more difficult to remove as well, which is yet another reason to talk to us about professional teeth whitening if you want a truly whiter smile.

(With regard to e-cigarettes and vaping, there’s still a lot of research to be done. Even if they don’t contribute to stains in the same way that cigarettes do, the early research suggests the e-cigarettes do increase your risk for gum disease, which is the leading cause of tooth loss in the United States.)

Getting Rid Of Your Stains

If you’ve bought a tube of toothpaste (and we assume you have bought several) in the past 15 years, then you have probably noticed the rise in the number of self-proclaimed “whitening” products on the shelves.

The American Dental Association has noticed, too. That’s why the ADA Council on Scientific Affairs took a closer look at the various whitening products available to patients.

The council determined that there are two categories of whitening products — toothpaste and products with bleaching agents. This is important because when you see “whitening” on a box, it doesn’t always mean the same thing.

The council noted that whitening toothpaste can remove some of the surface stains from your teeth. If you are interested in teeth whitening, then you are probably looking for something that goes deeper, however.

Products with bleaching agents can do that to varying degrees. The bleaching agent is typically hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide (which breaks down into hydrogen peroxide). These can get below the surface, and these come in multiple products including gels and whitening strips.

The Advantage Of Professional Whitening

The biggest difference between commercial and professional whitening products is the amount of bleaching agent. By comparison, professional products can have 7 to 11 times more power than commercial products.

This is part of the reason professional products can work much better and much faster than over-the-counter products.

Another advantage of professional whitening at Millburn Dental Arts is that we will create a set of custom-fitted trays for you to use with the product. This custom fit makes it easier to spread the gel evenly across your smile. When used as directed, this gives your smile a uniformly white appearance in less time.

That gets to another risk of commercial products — overuse. It can be tempting to use commercial whitening too often, which can cause damage to your teeth, which leads us to another point made by the ADA council.

Before you use any bleaching product, you should visit with a dentist, like our own Dr. Krosser. For people who already have dental crowns, dental fillings, or extremely dark teeth, whitening may not be the most effective way to change your smile. If you are one of them, we may recommend a different way to bring back your white, bright smile.
