Top 3 Reasons Adults Should Have Straight Teeth
There is a misconception in this country that our dental development ends once we enter adolescence. After all, that’s the age that most of us had braces, wisdom tooth removal procedures, or even the occasional filling.
Whatever the case, many adults I meet believe that the teeth they have now are the teeth they’ll have forever. Our Millburn dental office doesn’t believe that adults have to settle for bad teeth. With more modern tools in dentistry and noninvasive procedures, our teeth are lasting longer than ever before. So I encourage my patients to take care of their teeth and keep them looking beautiful. One area that I focus on in my practice is straightening crooked teeth. Straight teeth are an important when it comes to your oral health and overall appearance.
So today I want to give you 3 reasons why you should have straight teeth.
1. Straight teeth can give you a healthier mouth. Patients who have crooked teeth can be at a greater risk of dental decay or gum disease, or even dental trauma. By straightening the teeth, the teeth become easier to clean, which decreases your risk of tooth decay or gum disease. Gum disease is one of our biggest concerns as dentists. It’s the leading cause of tooth loss and linked to harmful illnesses like heart disease and diabetes.
2. Straight teeth are important in your social life. It’s no secret that a great smile can make you look more attractive. But there is some science that tells us that straight teeth and a beautiful smile change the way people look at you. The American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry found in a survey that about 50 percent of Americans believe the smile is THE MOST important feature. The same study also found that people believe the smile twice as important than words in regards to making a good first impression. A similar study found that people believe that having straight, beautiful teeth make you appear more intelligent. I’ll be upfront and say that orthodontics or cosmetic dentistry will not make you smarter! But it’s interesting to see how that’s our perception.
3. Straight teeth prevent unnatural wear and tear. When your teeth and bite are not in the most appropriate position, you can develop wear on your teeth. A bad bite or crooked teeth can cause additional stress on teeth and lead to fractures. Orthodontics can help patients find a more appropriate bite. Your mouth functions best when the teeth are balanced and touch in equal measure.
Those are some of my favorite reasons why it’s important to achieve straight teeth. At our Millburn dental office, we use Invisalign to treat adults with crooked teeth. Invisalign is a state-of-the-art treatment that uses clear aligners to gradually move teeth into a more appropriate location. Invisalign aligners look like clear mouthguards and can be easily removed for eating and cleaning.
The best part about Invisalign is that it’s subtle. Some of my patients who have Invisalign tell me that their closest family members have no idea they’re undergoing treatment.
Don’t let anyone tell you that your smile is no longer worth it. You deserve a grand, beautiful smile. Our office wants to help you with that. Call our office today at (973) 957-1604 to schedule your Invisalign consultation.
