Drink More Water
This is a good tip for everyone any time of year. Just like the treats we mentioned earlier, soft drinks, sports drinks, juices, and fruit-flavored drinks can contain lots of sugar. In fact, a 12-ounce soft drink can contain as much sugar as a candy bar.
By drinking water, you and your kids are exposing your teeth to less sugar. Water can also help wash away food particles and plaque on your kids’ teeth. So, if they do eat some ice cream, drinking water at the same time is a good idea.
There is another reason to drink water during the hottest days of the year. You need to stay hydrated. Whether you are working in the yard or playing a game, taking regular water breaks is a good idea.
Dry mouth is one of the early stages of dehydration. A dry mouth is also a good environment for bacteria to grow. Without saliva to wash away plaque and bacteria, you are more likely to develop gum disease and tooth decay.
Check The Water Before Swimming
Diving into a swimming pool is a great way to relax during the summer. It’s also important to know the chlorine level in the pool for the sake of your smile.
Chlorine serves an important purpose — to kill germs. Unfortunately, chlorine isn’t always great for teeth. Both prolonged exposure to chlorine and high levels of this chemical can cause problems.
People who spend more than six hours per week in the pool have a higher risk of “swimmer’s calculus.” This can cause teeth to turn yellow or brown in color.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that pools have a pH level between 7.2 and 7.8. You can purchase pool test strips to check these levels. When the pH level is 7 or lower, this can damage the enamel of your teeth.
For people who have a pool at home, it’s a good idea to check the pH levels once a week.
