Tips To Keep Your Family Smiling This Summer
Summer is one of best times of the year. Just ask your kids.
There’s no school. They can go swimming on hot days, and they can enjoy a sweet treat when the ice cream truck rolls through the neighborhood.
That’s also a reason our family dentist office in Millburn, NJ, wants to share a few tips help you keep your kids smiling … at least until schools starts again.
Schedule Your Family’s Dental Care During The Summer
This can make life a little simpler for you. By scheduling your family’s dental care during the summer, you won’t have to pull anyone out of school.
Before your family leaves on vacation, why not get a dental cleaning and exam. The last thing you want is a dental problem to ruin your family fun.
If you’ve got a son or daughter who is ready for orthodontic care, summer is a great time to get started. We offer Invisalign® clear aligners as a way to straighten teeth. It does take a few days to get used to wearing them. By starting this summer, wearing the aligners won’t seem like a big deal when school does start again.
Plan Ahead To Snack Healthy
You know better than anyone how much your kids can eat. You also know that your kids would be happy to eat ice cream, cookies, potato chips, and all kinds of junk food all summer.
You know that all those sugary and starchy snacks can cause problems, too. Specifically, the sugars in those foods are great for the bacteria that cause tooth decay and gum disease. The more of those foods your kids eat, the more food particles are likely to get stuck in or on their teeth.
Now, we are all for kids enjoying an ice cream cone on a hot day. That’s one of summer’s great pleasures.
We also know that planning ahead can help your kids make healthy snacking decisions. Talking to your kids now can help you decide together on some healthier options to keep at home. This will make it easier for your kids to choose those foods more often.
Drink More Water
This is a good tip for everyone any time of year. Just like the treats we mentioned earlier, soft drinks, sports drinks, juices, and fruit-flavored drinks can contain lots of sugar. In fact, a 12-ounce soft drink can contain as much sugar as a candy bar.
By drinking water, you and your kids are exposing your teeth to less sugar. Water can also help wash away food particles and plaque on your kids’ teeth. So, if they do eat some ice cream, drinking water at the same time is a good idea.
There is another reason to drink water during the hottest days of the year. You need to stay hydrated. Whether you are working in the yard or playing a game, taking regular water breaks is a good idea.
Dry mouth is one of the early stages of dehydration. A dry mouth is also a good environment for bacteria to grow. Without saliva to wash away plaque and bacteria, you are more likely to develop gum disease and tooth decay.
Check The Water Before Swimming
Diving into a swimming pool is a great way to relax during the summer. It’s also important to know the chlorine level in the pool for the sake of your smile.
Chlorine serves an important purpose — to kill germs. Unfortunately, chlorine isn’t always great for teeth. Both prolonged exposure to chlorine and high levels of this chemical can cause problems.
People who spend more than six hours per week in the pool have a higher risk of “swimmer’s calculus.” This can cause teeth to turn yellow or brown in color.
The Centers for Disease Control recommends that pools have a pH level between 7.2 and 7.8. You can purchase pool test strips to check these levels. When the pH level is 7 or lower, this can damage the enamel of your teeth.
For people who have a pool at home, it’s a good idea to check the pH levels once a week.
