Avoid Foods That Attack The Teeth
Our schools try to provide structure and a balanced diet for our children, and sometimes that goes away over the summer break. Children out of school may not get the same balanced meals at daycare, and if they stay at home while you work, they have more access than ever to the pantry and refrigerator. There are many foods and drinks that can increase the risk of cavities and dental problems.
Candies, especially sticky treats, have loads of sugar that will increase the production of cavity-causing acids in your mouth. And then you have soda. Most sodas have about 40 grams of sugar per 12 ounces! That’s a huge amount of sugar in one drink, and it’s well over the recommended daily sugar intake, which is just 25 grams.
Some healthy treats to consider:
- Crunchy fruits and vegetable. Foods like apples and celery are low in acidity and promote healthy saliva production that helps flush food debris and bacteria from the teeth.
- Dairy products. Yogurt, cheese, and milk are all high in calcium and reduce the acid levels in the mouth.
- Vitamin C. You find it in foods like strawberries, broccoli, and nuts. Vitamin C is great for decreasing inflammation in the body and promoting healthy teeth and gums.
- Vitamin D. This helps promote your body’s calcium levels. You’ll find Vitamin D in foods like eggs and fish.
Protect Teeth During Athletics
A lot of our children will participate in sports this summer. Many local kids are getting ready for the football season, or perhaps they have summer basketball camp. Whatever the case, it’s important to protect your children’s teeth with a mouthguard. You can find dental mouthguards at any pharmacy or sporting goods store around the country. The basic mouthguard is called a boil-and-bite mouthguard. This mouthguard is generic and made from everyone
A custom mouthguard will fit only one person’s mouth. Because the mouthguard fits perfectly, it thoroughly protects the teeth and gums. Not only that, but a custom mouthguard makes it easier for your child to breathe — because it will not obstruct the airway like some generic devices. We recommend that parents have their children fitted for a custom mouthguard even if their child is not involved in a traditional contact sport. While sports like hockey and football and can lead to dental trauma, it’s also possible for your child to lose teeth or suffer serious dental injury during non-contact sports like basketball, baseball or even soccer.
A majority of dental injuries that are occur during sports affect the the front teeth in the mouth. Not only is dental trauma painful, but it can cause a lifetime of problems for your child — emotionally, medically, and financially. The teeth are meant to last forever, so do your child a HUGE favor and give their teeth the best protection possible.
Schedule Dental Exams Before School Begins
You and your children probably don’t want to already start thinking about the first day of school, but it will be here before you know it. Before that day, you’ll have a lot on your plate. You’ll need to purchase clothes and supplies … and schedule an appointment with your dentist. A visit with a dentist this summer can give your child a clean bill of health before the school year rolls around. You might not know that children miss about 51 million hours of class instruction every year because of dental problems.
Millburn Dental Arts is a family dental location that can resolve nearly any dental problem. We are treating children with advanced preventive treatments like dental sealants (placed on the biting surface of teeth to literally block out cavities) and fluoride (used to prevent the risk of cavities and even repair enamel).
